Normal MM to learn Dota2. in General Discussion

My friend has this bizarre idea that he will get his 3k mmr back and then go to play normalmatchmaking for a while to learn and then come back to his 3k mmr and stomp with his newly learned wisdon? Yay or nay? For me it's like learning to play poker in Zynga and then going to Pokestars... It won't work.

      3k is not pokerstars tho..

its pokerkids so he may have a chance there :)

lol but thats not what I had in mind, I meant that playing normal mm to learn dota2(to increase one's mmr) is like to drink non-alcoholic beer to increase tolerance against alcohol.

          plz do

Ur bizarre friend is actually a smart guy, cuz it works if u want to play new role/hero and try out certain mechanics (or farm compendium points). If u do that in ranked, u do risk ur mmr, cuz rmm is always tryhard. I started doing that recently in order to not waste too many points. but idk - in 3k everything is possible.

Train hard, fight easy - Alexander Suvorov. Yes, you might lose mmr, but in the long run I think it's better to fight versus good foes than those trolls in normal matchmaking, who gives a fuck about it anyway.

              plz do

You need some theory input on exercising.
Every training has different objectives - being physical training, mental training, studies, job. Usually you want to train something, you are weak at. You make better progression if u start w ur own resources and then make the training accordingly harder and harder.
If you want to study math, but suck at calculus - you wont get better by solving the hardest equations - however you will get better by solving equations, which are your level and slightly above your level.
If you can manage 50 push ups with out problems, u can train harder than if you can only manage 10 push ups.
I guess you understood my point.

And here comes the hook for dota in theory: if u accomplish 50 push ups w Slark, u can start training hard in rmm. But if u only accomplish 10 push ups w Slark, u should start training in nmm. Also, u do others a favor by not being dunning kruger making everyone else miserable.

You can get good by just playing. You will get better by training.

normal mm and ranked mm is pretty much the same until 4.5+ i think..

                  plz do

nmm has a "hidden ranking" and rmm has a public ranking. Hence, nmm is less competitive. I have for example in solo nmm always normal skill games while in solo rmm always very high skill games. Basically because i have played 600 games nmm and 1400 games in rmm.

Your friend's plan can work out if you want to do it like this. First you lower your ranked MMR by playing a hero you are bad at playing until you start winning some of the games. You can still try to win, you just won't because you are weak on that hero. Then you pick the hero you want to learn and decide, based on copying a successful style, build, items, etc from a successful Very High spammer of that hero (watch their games to see how they make it work). This is much more effective than simply reading a guide. Next spam your chosen hero in unranked games. Finally after you have perfected your technique go back to ranked and win 10 to 15 games in a row easily.

I find that people typically have a 1k to 1.5k MMR range between best and worst heroes. If you lost games with your worst hero down to the bottom of that range, you could then win back a huge number of games on a rise of maybe 1k MMR or even 2k MMR.
If you want to save time manipulating the system however it would be easier to make a smurf, claim no MOBA experience, feed badly for several games and start at very low MMR.
