    Right now my specs:

    R9 380 2GB
    +Phenom 975

I was thinking of purchasing a better CPU, since I'm aware mine is not very good for 2017. The CPU I was thinking of is the i7-8700k. I hear as well that Dota 2 (Source in general) tends to be CPU dependent, however I do feel that may be outdated information since Source 2 != Source.

My question is basically: should I upgrade my GPU or CPU for a smoother gaming experience? I would like to achieve 120fps in 1440p, I can either spend $600 on getting an i7-8700k, or maybe I'll just spend $760 on a 1080ti or something? Of course I'm aware a Phenom 975 would be a bottleneck for any GPU upgrade I purchase, but I'll think about fully upgrading my PC parts in the future--for now I'm only curious which is the better limited option.

MAn, I definitely need a new chair. Now that I think of it.

        invis?

          pls activate your windows

Yeah that is annoying lol. I can't remove it with activators =\

            chicken spook,,,,

Disable windows update and try it again

Thanks for the tip, kuuki, I'll try it out on one of these days.

what fps are you getting now? Your rig already seems capable of 120 fps.

I'll give you my story. I too have a 144hz 1440p monitor (BenQ) w/Freesync. I have a R9 290X graphics card. (pretty good card) In order to have both 1440p and 144hz, I have to enable -vulkan in the dota2 startup options in Steam. Otherwise, dx11 doesn't have the technology. (You can either do 1080p and 144hz OR 1440p and 60hz) It is probably an AMD thing related to the Freesync technology that enables the 1440p/144hz stutter-free tech.

Unfortunately, I do not have enough GPU power to do both 1440p and 144hz w/Vulkan enabled and decent graphics settings. I get a jumpy ~50fps. What makes it worse is that I have an AMD FX-8350, which is pretty dated (less dated than yours I believe, however), so the CPU could be the bottleneck as well. Currently, I have dx11 enabled and have settled for a 1440p resolution w/60hz. There is never any lag, but I am not utilizing the 144hz portion of my monitor. (just a very smooth 60fps experience)

To answer your question, I don't know for sure, but I do know that pre-ryzen AMD CPUs have terrible single-threaded performance. Dota needs good single-threaded performance since it doesn't utilize a lot of cores. If I hazard a guess, the CPU is the bigger bottleneck of the two.

                      I have a gtx1080 and i can't get 144fps in 1080p because i have TOO MUCH GPU POWER :DDDD
The gpu just runs at 25% all the time and i get between 120-144 fps when i could get 300+
It was fine before the 7.00 patch but now the gpu usage won't go higher than 30% :(

Just let it be at 120-140 good lord it's not like the extra 100 fps will make you a 5k player anyway
Plus your GPU will stay alive for a longer time that way

@Dire Wolf, I get around 65 - 100 FPS depending on what's happening with medium/low settings 1440, maxed out as low as 55. I can occasionally reach up to 127 but it's really inconsistent in doing so, hence the problem.

@GAFF isn't freesync always on? My monitor is a-sync but it comes up as freesync enabled. I can't tell if it's working or not tbh.

@kuuki, true but it's the GPU owner's job to limit the FPS to conserve life. PC gaming is all about freedom. There are 165hz monitors out there too, soon we'll see like 328hz lol

Oh well I would upgrade the cpu to a new i7-8xxx series if you really want to get max performance. That's probably the only way then since a 380 should already be super fast for dota.
