Vision. Vision is the key to a lot of Dota. Good vision can keep your team from getting ganked. Will give your team information when someone is alone and when you could go in for a nice clean pick-off. Even if you start roaming around, you should have wards to give your team information about the whereabouts of the enemy.
And try to be there for the fights. You need to be active on the map and be there to save your team mates and maybe turn things around... Turning a gank into a lost fight for the enemy team.
Team oriented items are really good. Glimmer Cape, Force Staff, Mekansm, Mana Boots etc. Are all really good. Even that Pavise can work out, I don't know I've never built it, but these items are important. You need to know what item to prioritize, but you should have at least one of these in practically every game.
1. Don't be mentally fragile.
2. Stop playing support, if at any point of game you see more than 2 wards in shop.
